Make The Change

12th March 2013

Tapping into the resources of talent from other professions is one option for tackling the technical skills shortage in the oil and gas industry.

If you work in careers such as the armed forces, the emergency services or utility companies you might have the experience and transferable skills necessary to help the industry fill its chronic skills gap and develop professionally yourself.

With investment generating thousands of new jobs there couldn't be a better time to make the change, however there are a few key things to bear in mind if you want to switch careers to oil and gas. Our tips for making a successful transition include:

  • Make sure you have a positive "can do" attitude and that you are willing to learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Be very well prepared for your job interview and expect some difficult questions. For example, why do you want to work in oil and gas? Saying you want to earn lots of money is the wrong answer!
  • Make sure you don't give up after the first decline letter. Every company has a different view on qualifications, some will insist on NEBOSH or ISO accreditation but others will be pleased to further your personal development by providing training.
  • Be tenacious. Open vacancies change constantly within companies, keep reviewing advertised job vacancies and stay in regular contact with your recruitment consultant as this will make your job search more targeted and efficient.
  • Your lack of industry experience may require you to accept a more junior position at first, but your skills and experience will be valued.
  • Don't expect to walk into a high day rate, many companies are looking for permanent staff not expensive contractors.
  • Don't assume that an offshore survival certificate means you are now qualified to work offshore. Employers will be more interested in the transferable skills you can bring to the role.

Good luck - there are exciting opportunities out there waiting for you!
